CIGAR REVIEW: MONTECRISTO EPIC CRAFT CURED TORO
By Gary Korb
Country of Origin: Nicaragua (Manufactured by Plasencia Cigars)
Size: 6" x 52
Strength: Full
Wrapper: Vintage 2006 Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan EstelĂ, Jalapa, and Condega
Binder: Nicaraguan Ometepe
Construction and Overall Appearance: Solidly rolled – and I mean SOLID. This cigar has some serious weight to it. Wrapper is an even milk-chocolate color. Triple seam cap was deftly applied and I didn't even have to chop it; the blades alone lifted it off from the top seam in a perfect circle.
Draw: Very good.
Cold draw: Very light in flavor. Only a suggestion of leather and cedar.
First few puffs: The foot took a little longer than usual to get going. Once I had a good burn going I tasted light pepper, followed almost immediately by notes of sweet cedar.
Base flavors: Charry notes of wood, sweet tobacco, and light pepper on the finish. Sweetness increased by the second act.
Aroma: Charred wood at first, which offered an appealing sweetness.
Burn & Ash Quality: Big plumes of smoke issued with each puff. Burn started off a bit irregular during the first inch. Once past that interval, it burned like a champ with a micro-thin carbon line.
Balance of flavors: Excellent.
280 Character Summary: A pleasant sweetness lies at the core of this puro along with notes of wood and a long, light-peppery finish that lingers on the palate. The smoke also reveals a number of impressive flavor change-ups along the ride. A good choice for fans of Montecristo and full-bodied cigars.
